Indiana State University Honors Five with Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Indiana State University Alumni Association has announced the recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award. The 2004 recipients will be honored at a reception and banquet on Friday, Nov. 5, in Dede I and II of Hulman Memorial Student Union. Among the 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients is:

Edwin Miller. A member of the ISU Foundation Board since 1995, Edwin Miller earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in business administration from ISU.

Currently CEO and president of Millennium Capital Group, a private investment firm with ties to New Jersey, Miller spent 29 years with Eli Lilly Company, starting out as a financial analyst. During his time at Lilly he served in corporate finance, pharmaceutical marketing and finance, business development and as chief financial officer for two medical device companies. He retired from Lilly in 1998 as vice president of finance and corporate treasurer.

Miller was selected as ISU's College of Business Distinguished Alumnus in 1999 and was recognized by Treasury and Risk Management Magazine for his leadership of Lilly's treasury and finance units which led to the company receiving three of the magazine's Alexander Hamilton Awards.

Miller and his wife, Mary Ann, reside in Far Hills, New Jersey.

ISU Insurance Program Marks 15th Anniversary

Through development of a rigorous curriculum, significant input from industry leaders, and a strong commitment to experiential learning outside the classroom, Indiana State University's insurance and risk management program has evolved into one of national prominence program in financial services education. This celebration marks the 15th anniversary of the program and recognizes the dedication, service and leadership of its first chair, Larry Coleman.

Keynote speaker for this celebratory dinner is John Mutz, chair of the Lumina Foundation and former Indiana lieutenant governor.

Sanders Named Outstanding Educator

Joseph C. Sanders, program coordinator and professor of analytical accounting at Indiana State University, has been named Outstanding Educator by the Indiana CPA Society Board of Directors.

Sanders, secretary of the Indiana CPA Society's Educational Foundation, will be presented the award formally during the CPA Celebration Oct. 15 at Indianapolis. INCPAS has approximately 7,500 members statewide in fields such as strategic business advising, financial consulting, education, corporate management and others.

Sanders was a senior accountant at McGladrey, Hendrickson & Pullen in Champaign, Ill., prior to entering the ranks of higher education. A graduate of Eastern Illinois University and the University of Kentucky, Sanders taught at Eastern Illinois University, the University of Kentucky, and Eastern Kentucky University before joining Indiana State University in 1992. Future of Financial Services is Focus of Open House

WHERE: Indianapolis Headquarters of Networks Financial Institute Dedication is June 17

WHAT: The future of financial services in Indiana will be the focus of the Networks Financial Institute (NFI) Open House on Thursday, June 17. The Open House will also formally dedicate the Indianapolis headquarters office and celebrate some of the early achievements of this $20 million initiative.

WHO: Liz Georgakopoulos, Executive Director of Networks Financial Institute, Lloyd W. Benjamin III, President of Indiana State University and Ronald F. Green, Dean of Indiana State University College of Business will host the event that will bring together key stakeholders from Indiana State University including ISU alumni serving as business and higher education leaders concerned about the future of financial services in Indiana.

Indiana State Names 16 Incoming Freshmen Networks Scholars

Sixteen incoming Indiana State University freshmen have been named to the second class of Networks scholars this spring.

Lisa Akers, of Rockville, Ind., has been named a Networks Scholar and is planning to major in accounting. She graduated from Rockville High School and is the daughter of Rick and Jean Akers.

The Networks Scholars Program, funded by part of a $20 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc., provides chosen students with a $20,000 four-year scholarship. Networks Scholars are expected to participate in one paid internship, an international experience, work with faculty and executive mentors and participate in leadership development opportunities.

Indiana State University Commencement Ceremony

May 4, 2004

The 133rd Indiana State University Commencement Ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, in Hulman Center. A Prelude Concert will begin at 1 p.m.

Honorary degree recipients and student award recipients include:

Hines emorial Medal - Karen Correa. An international student from the United Arab Emirates, Karen Correa was born in Bombay, India. Having earned a 4.0 grade point average at Indiana State University, Correa graduates this May with a major in management information systems.

Rankin Memorial Senior Aware - Jennifer L. Gray, a native of Indianapolis, has completed an insurance and risk management major with a 3.96 grade point average at Indiana State. She entered ISU as a Gongaware Scholar, one of the most prestigious scholarships offered by the University and the School of Business.

Indiana State Insurance Students Gain First-hand Knowledge by Visiting Lloyd's of London, Other Sites During Europe trip

Twenty-two students in Mary Ann Boose's Insurance 449 class got the experience of a lifetime over Spring Break when they traveled to London, Marseille and Paris.

While the trip was full of cultural and entertainment activities like seeing the "Mona Lisa," Buckingham Palace and the Eiffel Tower, the students also received valuable information pertaining to their major when they toured Lloyd's of London and visited the Chamber of Commerce and EuroMed Marseille University.

The group left on March 5 and returned March 15, and while the time seemed to fly by for many, the knowledge they gained and memories they have are sure to last a lifetime.

Business Professors' Research of Clay County Small Business Accepted for Case Study

A case study by Indiana State University professor Max Douglas and assistant professor Aruna Chandra has been accepted for the upcoming edition of "Annual Advances in Business Cases ‹ 2003."

The study is of a small Clay County business called The Swiss Connection, owned by Alan and Mary Yegerlehner. It is a small dairy farm just north of Clay City, which uses Holistic Resource Management (HRM) to produce healthier dairy products including milk and cheese. Students in the ISU School of Business have already done a marketing plan for the business. The case study, says Chandra, takes the topic "full circle" and links the university and the community.

Morgan Stanley Executive Participates in Risk Manager-in-Residence Program at Indiana State

Personal integrity, building strong working relationships and being able to adapt to change are some of the traits that make a successful risk manager, says Zakia Campbell, executive director of risk management at Morgan Stanley in New York City and a recent Risk Manger in Residence at Indiana State University. "I had planned on becoming an attorney," Campbell said during an interview before she speaking to a class of insurance and risk management majors. "But for 21 years now I have been with the same firm, working in risk management. Išve seen smaller acquisitions and a large merger; there have been many changes in management and reporting; there has been a lot of moving and travel. But that is part of the job. Sometimes you have to leave where you want to be in order to move up. Three years away from your first choice in location isnšt a long time if it is a stepping stone to get you where you want to be."

Indiana State University Networks Announces Graduate Studies Fellowship Program

The Indiana State University School of Business and Networks Institute for Financial Services announce The Networks Graduate Studies Fellowship Program for Academic Excellence in Financial Services.

The objective of the program is to attract high-achieving and research-oriented MBA and other graduate students to Indiana State University.

"This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in financial services," said Dale Varble, associate dean of the School of Business. "There are very good opportunities for mentoring; there are funds available for career development, for research and certainly there will be networking and meeting other people in the industry."

Insurance Students Travel to Europe

Twenty-two students in Mary Ann Boose¹s Insurance 449 class got the experience of a lifetime over Spring Break when they traveled to London, Marseille and Paris. Before their trip, Boose, associate professor and program coordinator of insurance and risk management, explained to her students how Lloyd's of London operates and what it insures. It is believed that Lloyd's Coffee House opened in 1688 in Tower Street, London. The first mention of Lloyd's, according to its website, www.lloyds.com, "appeared in the late 1680s when an advertisement in the London Gazette offered 'a reward of a guinea for information about stolen watches, claimable to Mr. Edward Lloyd's Coffee House in Tower Street.' "Today, Lloyd's is home to some of the most skilled and experienced specialist underwriters in the world, leading the industry in creating new areas of insurance, such as kidnap and ransom, space and aviation and cyber-liability, in addition to covering more standard classes of insurance,"

Financial Services Professionals Invited to Reception for Morgan Stanley Executive

Indiana State Universityšs Networks Institute for Financial Services is hosting a reception for C. Zakia Campbell, executive director of risk management at Morgan Stanley, at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 23 at the Skyline Club in Indianapolis.

The event is free and open to all members of the financial services industry.

Campbell will be visiting ISUšs campus as part of the Spencer Educational Foundation's Risk Manager in Residence program.

Campbell joined Morgan Stanley in 1983. She graduated with honors from the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury earning a B.A. in political science. She received her Associate in Risk Management and continues her education by taking courses in finance and related disciplines. Networks Summit Joins Financial Services, Policymakers

Indiana State University students and faculty joined financial services industry leaders, policymakers and state and federal regulators Tuesday and Wednesday for a regulatory reform summit sponsored by Networks Institute for Financial Services and the Insurance Regulation Committee of the American Bar Association.

Networks is an ISU School of Business outreach made possible by a $20 million grant from the Lilly Endowment.

The event covered topics ranging from the mutual fund scandal to the future of terrorism risk insurance.

Regulatory Reform Summit, Sponsored by Indiana State University Networks Institute for Financial Services

The Summit will focus on potential changes in the way that insurance and mutual funds are regulated. Confirmed speakers include Sen. John Sununu, member of both the Senate Banking and Commerce Committees; Rep. Richard Baker, Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government-Sponsored Entities; Wayne Abernathy, Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions at the Dept. of the Treasury; and Kathy Casey, Staff Director and Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee. Former Rep. Rick Lazio, who now heads the Financial Services Forum, will also play a key role in the mutual fund discussion.

Indiana State University launched the Networks Institute for Financial Services in 2003 with the generous support of the Lilly Endowment. The Institute¹s mission is to facilitate broad, collaborative thinking, dialogue, and progress on important issues facing the financial services industries.

ISU Assistant Professor Nominated for National Teacher of the Year Award

William J. Wilhelm, program coordinator and assistant professor of administrative systems and business education at Indiana State University, has been nominated for the National Business Education Association Collegiate or University Teacher of the Year Award. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to business education by a senior college or university business educator. "It is an honor to have been nominated for this prestigious national award," said Wilhelm. "But considering that the nomination was issued by the Indiana Business Education Association Board Members, it is especially gratifying."

The Indiana Business Education Association is the state professional association representing all business educators in Indiana. "The IBEA board members felt that Dr. Wilhelm would be an excellent representative for the state of Indiana," said Donna Kimmerling, past president and current board member of the IBEA.

The award winner will be announced at the 2004 National Business Education Association Annual Conference in Chicago April 7 - 10. "I'm certainly hopeful that I may receive the award," Wilhelm said.
